Laboratory safety is paramount, and this document provides an excellent list of safety measures for working in the nanotechnology / chemistry lab that can provide guidance to a large range of people, from classroom teachers who are trying out an individual experiment to lab instructors who are creating a new course or who want to revise their existing laboratory safety instructions, to students who want to learn best practices.
As a former chemistry lab manager, university laboratory instructor, and research project advisor, I know how challenging it can be to create a safety training program and associated documents that will help students understand how to approach laboratory safety and reduce the risk of accidents (as well as the volume of laboratory waste.) As common laboratory practices have improved over the past 30 years since I was first trained to work in the lab, and as new technologies present new issues, a document such as this is really valuable for sharing information that is up-to-date and applicable to today's classroom laboratory environment.
