Abstract

This is the first of six short lectures that provide an introduction to nanoscale physics. This segment summarizes three key challenges to the Classical understanding of physics, which led to the development of Quantum physics. These challenges are: (i) The Ultraviolet Catastrophe, (ii) Our understanding of the Atom, and (iii) The Photoelectric Effect.
