Spill Cleanup of Dry Powder Procedures and Controls

Operation

Clean up dry, engineered nanomaterials using:

  • A dedicated, approved HEPA vacuum whose filtration effectiveness has been verified (Note: Consider possible pyrophoric hazards associated with vacuuming up nanoparticles)
  • Wet wiping (Note: Consider possible reactivity of nanoparticles with the wipe solvent)
  • Other facility-approved methods that do not involve dry sweeping or the use of compressed air
  • Dispose of used cleaning materials and wastes in accordance with the home Laboratory’s hazardous-waste procedures

Controls

  • PPE should be used to minimize potential for respiratory, dermal and eye exposure
  • Latex or nitrile clean room gloves
  • Verified respiratory controls depending on the materials

Alternatively, Control Banding may be employed when more is known about material reactivity, exposure duration and material state.
