| Biography | Karl Hess received his Ph.D. (Physics/Math) from the University of Vienna (Austria) in 1970. He is a Swanlund professor and Center for Advanced Study professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois and a full-time faculty member in the Beckman Institute; Computational Electronics Group. His fields of professional interest are semiconductor physics, computational electronics, quantum transport, and quantum information. Hess' work includes progress in supercomputing applications. He developed with his graduate students the "Full Band Monte Carlo Technique" which is basic to the understanding of electronic transport far away from the band edges. He has also utilized this method to develop a complete theory of impact ionization and of ballistic transport. Recently, his group contributed significantly to the simulation of semiconductor lasers and nanostructures and he co-discovered the improvement of CMOS chip lifetime through deuterium processing. |
