Biography

Huw Summers is an EPSRC-funded Advanced Fellow (1996 to 2001). His general area of research is in the physics of semiconductor lasers, particularly in the control of gain/absorption characteristics through the use of strained quantum wells and the influence of this on the lasers dynamic performance. Another related area of interest is the study of carrier-carrier interactions with laser diodes and their influence upon devices operating at high speed.

The main focus of the present research is on the integration of VCSELs with other optoelectronic components. In particular, this concentrates on using a VCSEL as a pump source for a solid-state crystal to form a fully integrated hybrid laser.
